Wave Drummer Beating Same Sad Tune

Wave Drummer Beating Same Sad Tune

New week, same old story. Tulane can beat anyone in the nation within the friendly confines of Turchin Stadium as witnessed by the Wave's three game sweep over then conference leader Houston over the weekend. The other end of the spectrum was seen last night when the Wave ventured to Baton Rouge to tangle with arch-rival LSU.

Unlike the last meeting between these two teams, there would be no dramatic rally as the Tigers scored all the games runs in the first three innings in routing Tulane, 8-0.

Luckily for Tulane their next Conference USA series with Alabama-Birmingham is at Turchin, where the Greenies are 21-1. Like last weekends matchup with the Cougar's, the matchup with the Blazers looks to be a low-scoring affair.

UAB comes into the weekend with a team ERA of 3.63 but the Blazers' three starting hurlers have posted some amazing numbers so far this year. The leader is Scott Gibson (5-1, 2.01), but Lucas Trotter (3-1, 2.60) and Jon Burgett (4-2, 3.59) have been effective as well.

The Blazers started the season on fire (no pun intended), running their record to 13-0 to begin the year. With that start, the Blazers moved up into the Top 25, having easily eclipsed last season's win total of 16.

But the Blazers have struggled lately and after losing to Auburn 4-2 on Tuesday night have now lost eight in a row. UAB is currently 21-14, 6-8 in C-USA heading into the Tulane series. UAB has a team batting average of .283 with 26 HR and are led by Kyle Leon .383-8-40, Daniel Hill .372-6-29. Tulane will attempt to tame the Blazer batters by sending Brian Bogusevic (2-0, 0.42), J.R. Crowel (6-0, 2.72) and Cory Hahn (7-1, 2.15) to the mound. Runs look to be at a premium this weekend but thankfully Tulane has been more productive offensively at home than on the road. Michael Aubrey .459-8-47, Jonny Kaplan .359-6-28, and Tony Giarratano .352-4-26 are Tulane's hottest and most consistent hitters. Kaplan also has 33 stolen bases and the trio combined has 62 of Tulane's 79 swipes.
