Tulane football standout running back
Mewelde Moore
has been selected to the All-Spring Team by The Sporting News, the magazine released today via its web site, www.sportingnews.com.
Moore is the top returning all-purpose back in the nation with more rushing and receiving yards in the last two seasons (3,942) than any other returning player in the country. A candidate for All-America honors, as well as the Doak Walker Award, he is Tulane's all-time leading rusher with 3,449 yards and tops the career charts in all-purpose yards with 5,182. Overall, the Baton Rouge native owns 23 school records. As a sophomore, he became the first player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for over 1,250 yards and catch more than 60 passes in the same season, which he accomplished in 2001.
The Sporting News cites Moore’s mature offensive line as being a key factor for him being one of the top players to watch in the nation. Last year, the Green Wave offensive line featured just one returning starter and a pair of freshmen starters.
Tulane, which won the Con’Agra Foods Hawai’i Bowl in 2002, opens its 2003 season on Labor Day, Sept. 1 with a nationally-televised Monday evening game against
TCU
at the Louisiana Superdome.
Moore also plays professional baseball, spending the past two summers in the San Diego Padres organization. He expects to play for the Padres’ Single A affiliate in Eugene, Ore., this summer. The Eugene Emeralds open their season on June 18 against the Salem/Keizer Volcanoes.
