Teurlings, on the other hand, wasn't ranked during the preseason although head coach Sonny Charpentier's Rebels have proven that wrong.
Teurlings quarterback Conner Cronin could cross the 2,000-yard passing threshold this evening. Cronin (pictured, bottom) is a 6-foot-6 senior who sat out last year after transferring from University. Junior RB Zach LaFleur is a hard-charger with good hands who could play baseball and/or football in college. WR Jimmie McBride hauled in 98 of Cronin's 233 yards passing in a second-round win over Bastrop.
McDonogh #35 upset 5th-seeded Salmen last week at home (22-6 final). Utah commit Carlos Henderson (96 rushing yards, 73 receiving, two TDs) was stellar with giant offensive lineman Kenneth Santa Marina (6-6, 325, SR) opening gaping holes. Santa Marina is a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 19 OG.
NO. 22 EAST FELICIANA (8-3) AT NO. 14 FARMERVILLE (10-2) -- EFHS and Farmerville met in last year's 3A first-round with the top-seeded Farmers advancing. East Feliciana, then the 32nd-seed, came within two points of a stunner (28-26 final).
Last week, Farmerville ousted No. 3 Eunice on the road (21-12) in the second round behind 321 team rushing yards. Ronnie Smith (5 carries, 24 yards) ran for a 10-yard TD and a two-point conversion.
East Feliciana greeted sixth-seeded Rayne rudely last week in the Florida Parishes. The Tigers built a commanding 33-3 lead by halftime. Cameron McKnight caught two TDs.
EFHS quarterback Kendell Beckwith is the state's No. 1 2013 player.
Beckwith (country's seventh-ranked senior defensive end) gained 30 yards with his feet (on three attempts) in the second round.
NO. 6 WEST SAINT JOHN (8-3) AT NO. 3 VERMILION CATHOLIC (11-1) -- This is another 2011 playoff rematch. West Saint John went to Abbeville in the 2011 1A semis and handed Vermilion Catholic its first loss in a four-plus hour marathon (54-31 final).
West Saint John RB Kylum Favorite returns to the "scene of the crime" tonight at VCHS. Favorite ran for 259 yards and three TDs last year. 2013 DL Eric Bell is committed to Tulane. Dontre Turner is another West Saint John senior defensive line stalwart.
There were concerns that Vermilion Catholic would experience a drop-off after saying goodbye to several seniors from last year's team, including the starting QB and leading receiver. Moreover, the Eagles are making do without RB Jacoby Davis (lost to injury during the regular season).
Michael Campbell answered the call when Davis went down. Campbell ran for a touchdown and caught another in Vermilion Catholic's 40-7 second-round rout of Cedar Creek.
