FREE: Colbert Explains Commitment To SMU

Houston Lamar QB Darrell Colbert was at SMU for junior day on Saturday and decided to pull the trigger. Come inside to find out why!
Throughout his time on the Hilltop,
head coach June Jones has strictly used pocket passers in his Run N’ Shoot offense.
But that policy appears to be changing.
On Saturday afternoon, Houston Lamar dual-threat quarterback
visited SMU for junior day and surprised Jones with a verbal commitment.
“I went in and talked to Coach Jones, but he didn’t have a clue I was going to commit. He was actually telling me to take my time with the recruiting process,” Colbert said. “I told him no, I’m committing to SMU. He was shocked. But he was really happy and so am I. I’m still happy”
Colbert, who picked up the SMU offer in January, will bring a new dimension to SMU’s pass heavy offense. Last season, the 5-foot-10, 165-pounder passed for over 2,500 yards, rushed for close to 700 yards and scored 38 touchdowns en route to leading Houston Lamar to the 5A Division I state title game.
“Being able to learn from Coach Jones is going to be amazing. He is the quarterback guru,” Colbert said. “He told me they were going to use me in a lot of different ways from the quarterback position and that he’s happy to have me.
“I feel I can bring a lot to SMU. I can throw the ball well, and I can run the ball well. I feel being a dual-threat quarterback is the best way to play this game. I hope I can be like
While at junior day, Colbert was able to tour the campus and the facilities. He came away impressed with both but what stood out to him the most were SMU’s prestigious academics.
“First of all, I was impressed with the academics. SMU is a really great school,” he said. “I loved it and my parents loved it too. The campus and the facilities were beautiful. It’s not too far away from home so that’s great too.”
Colbert may not be the only Houston Lamar player to commit to SMU. Both wide receiver
and offensive lineman
joined him at junior day and hold SMU offers.
Colbert says he has not had the opportunity to speak with his teammates but will be selling SMU when he gets the chance.
“I didn’t get to really talk to them because I get there a little later, but I will be talking to them soon,” Colbert said. “It would be great to play with my teammates at the next level so we’ll see.”
Now that Colbert is committed to SMU, he says he can focus on helping his team win the state title. So when he’s back in Dallas in December, Colbert expects to be hoisting that championship trophy.
“We don’t want to come back here and leave empty handed again. We are going to win it this time,” Colbert said. “I can concentrate on helping us do that now that I’ve made my decision.”
Colbert also had interest from Houston,
and a few others but says his verbal to SMU is completely solid.
