With a pair of double digit wins in it's past two games, the Tulane Green Wave men's basketball
team journeyed to Memphs, Tenn. to take on the No. 8-ranked Memphis Tigers, who are also
the No. 1 team in Conference USA.
Last season Memphis had devoured the Green Wave twice, winning both of the contests between the schols by a combined 59 points.
The past two games notwithstanding, the Tigers handed the Green Wave their heads Saturday
evening and continued their dominance of their conference opposition, cantering to a 95-51
conference victory. It was the Tigers 27th consecutive home court win at the FedEx Forum,
and came before a crowd of 17,176.
Memphis' win-loss record now stands at 21-3 overall, and 11-0 in C-USA. The Tigers
have put together a 13-game win streak.
Tulane's overall record now stands at 11-11, and the Green Wave falls to 4-6 in C-USA.
Prior to Saturday evening, Tulane had averaged 81 points per game in winning three of it's last
four, all by double digit numbers. The Green Wave had defeated USM, Rice and UTEP by
an average of 20 points per contest, and sufffered a heartbreaking loss to Tulsa by a single pointin a home game at Fogleman Arena.
Robert Dozier and Willie Kemp led the Tigers victory swagger, with both scoring 13 points.
Chris Douglas-Roberts and Tre'Von Willis added 12 points apiece to the Tiger scoring party,
and Jeremy Hunt added 11 points for the Tigers.
For Tulane, Chris Moore tallied 10 points and was the only player in double figures, while
leading scorer David Gomez, managed to get off only two shots and was held to just six points
for the night.
Freshman guard Kevin Sims, the teams's second-leading scorer was held scoreless by the Tigers,
failing to connect on all of his seven shots from the floor.
Memphis made 31-of-61 from the floor for 51 percent for the night, and Tulane made only
14-of-45 for a 31 percent shooting percentage.
The Tigers made 9-of-17 three point attempts and Tulane struggled from beyond the arc as well, making only 3-of-12 attempts.
The Tiger's scored 32 points off 21 Tulane turnovers. The Tigers turned the ball over 9 times, and Tulane managed to score only 9 points off turnovers.
Memphis opened the game with a 13-3 run that was capped by a Doneal Mack trey with 16:54
remaining in the first half. The Tigers went on another run, this one 13-0, run midway through
the first half. The Tigers took a very comfortable 51-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Memphis continued their dominance at the beginnng of the second half, going on a 10-1 run in the first four minutes of the final stanza. Memphis led by thirty at 61-31, and by forty at 72-32. The Tigers led by as many as 48-points in the final minutes of the game as they cruised to a convincing victory.
The Tigers defeated the Green Wave 75-56 in the regular season clash last year, and 105-65 in
the 2006 C-USA tournament.
Tulane returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 14th, when they host the University of Central Florida, in a C-USA game at Fogleman Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
