Green Wave Falls to Cross-Town Rival

Posted Mar 5, 2008

Tuesday night Tulane (6-3) dropped the first game of the 2008 Wow Cafe and Wingery Cup 4-2 to cross-town rival UNO (7-2) at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. The loss was the Green Wave 3rd defeat in the last 4 games.

Junior designated hitter Andrew Rodgers almost gave the Green Wave a come-from-behind win with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth with a deep drive to left field. However UNO's Joey Butler made a game-saving catch at the wall to end the game for the Privateers.

The dramatic ending was set up when right fielder Drew Allain was walked to begin the inning. First baseman Sam Honeck singled and catcher Jared Dyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Center fielder Aja Barto and freshman third baseman Rob Segedin each hit rbi singles to close the deficit to 4-2 and set up Rodgers final at bat.

UNO starting pitcher Bryan Cryer shutout the Green Wave for 8 innings, while recording the win and 9 strikeouts. Junior starting pitcher Jonathan Garrett had a quality start for the Green Wave pitching 6 1/3 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 3 earned runs, while recording 4 strikeouts.
