Green Wave Sweeps Pirates

Tulane improved its record to 36-15-1 overall and 13-6-1 in Conference USA action with a three-game sweep of #21 East Carolina (36-16, 11-10) at Clark LeClair Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina. The Green Wave took game one Friday night 5-4 before taking both games of a double header 10-8 Saturday.

Friday night Tulane held a 4-0 lead after seven innings before the Pirates mounted a furious comeback, scoring two runs in each of the final two innings. The deciding blow was first baseman Sam Honeck's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth which scored catcher Jared Dyer for the Green Wave's final run. From there, Rob Segedin pitched his way out a jam in the bottom of the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. Starting pitcher Shooter Hunt improved his record to 9-1 on the season, scattering five hits and 3 walks in 7.0 innings of work. Hunt recorded nine strikeouts.

Offensively, second baseman Seth Henry was 3-for-5 with one run and one rbi. Centerfielder, Anthony Scelfo was 2-for-4 with one walk, a homerun, 2 runs, and an rbi.

Saturday, reliever Mason Griffin retired the final four batters he faced to earn his seventh save of the season and secure the 10-8 victory in game one. Reliever Preston Claiborne (2-0) sacrificed two runs on 3 hits and one walk, while recording three strikeouts in 4.0 innings to earn the win. Offensively, the Green Wave was led by second baseman Seth Henry who went 4-for-5 with one run and 2 rbi. Third baseman Rob Segedin was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and 5 rbi. Centerfielder Anthony Scelfo finished game one 2-for-3 with 2 walks, a stolen base, and four runs scored.

Knotted up at eight, the final game of the series was decided in the eighth inning. Sophomore shortstop Josh Prince drew a two-out walk before rightfielder Drew Allain took a 1-2 pitch deep over the left field wall. Reliever Nick Pepitone (3-1) pitched shutout baseball for the final 3.1 innings to earn the win. Prince finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk, a homerun, three runs, and an rbi. Third baseman Rob Segedin was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a homerun, two runs, and 4 rbi.

Tulane returns to action Thursday, May 15th, as the Green Wave hosts Rice at 6 p.m.
