Friday, Tulane led game one of a doubleheader 4-2 after 7 innings, but Rice tied things up with a 2-run homerun in the eighth. The Owls plated four more runs in the ninth to put the game away 8-4.
The Green Wave squandered numerous opportunities leaving 12 runners stranded on base, eight in scoring position. Rice gave up a season-high 12 walks while Green Wave starter Jonathan Garrett got a no-decision after pitching 5.0 innings, scattering 5 hits for 2 runs, while recording 5 strikeouts.
In game two Tulane trailed 4-0 before ever getting an at bat. Rice scored 4 runs on 3 hits, an error, and 2 walks in the top of the first. Despite the horrid start, Matt Petiton settled down and finished with 7.0 innings pitched and 4 strikeouts, while surrendering 4 runs, 3 earned on 6 hits. Petiton (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season as the offense could generate only 2 runs in support of the sophomore lefty.
Tulane returns to action Wednesday, May 21, against sixth seeded Marshall at 7:30 p.m. as the Green Wave host the 2008 Entergy Conference USA Championship Tournament at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
